Hello!
It's nice to meet you! My name is Ning Chen, and I am an artist and interactive media producer who is deeply passionate about independent video games and games for social justice and education.
As an artist, I strive to tell stories that resonate deeply and emotionally. I believe that art is a process-driven form of expression that allows us to connect with ourselves and each other. I recently took a class called Games for Social Change, taught by Professor David Kelleher and hosted by Emerson College's Engagement Lab in collaboration with the local Boston non-profit, The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. Together, we created a card game called Peace Play: Unpacking the Principles of Peace and designed for play by incarcerated folk in order to promote emotional processing and healing. Throughout development, I primarily worked as the visual designer while also collaborating with my classmates and the Peace Institute on the game's narrative and mechanics. Through this experience, I formed invaluable ties with community members and gained important insight into the social power of games. I hope to bring the spirit of community and hope to each game I make in order to build strength through art.
In addition to my artistic experience, I also work as a producer, in which I endeavor to provide clear and effective communication in order to ensure the successful production of the project at hand. In my recent internship at the public media studio GBH, I worked in the Digital Kids’ Department to produce children’s educational games for the brands Work It Out Wombats!, Team Hamster!, and Acoustic Rooster. During my internship, I coordinated projects using Confluence and Jira, iterated on narrative design based on advisor feedback and play-testing, and clearly documented project decisions in order to facilitate communications between our team’s producers, designers, and developers. Through this experience, my skills in organization and communication supported my team in creating meaningful and impactful works, and the lessons I learned in this internship will continue to carry with me through my professional and artistic life.
Finally, I am passionate about working with other skilled creatives to execute ambitious artistic projects. As the Visual Arts Director of em magazine, which is a student-run magazine focusing on arts and culture, I coordinate projects undertaken by the artists on my team and communicate with the editors-in-chief regarding each project’s status in order to ensure the successful publication of the magazine at the end of each season. As I support my artists’ works from inception to execution, I meet one-on-one with artists in order to understand their ideas, styles, and scope, and I frequently check in with their progress, providing administrative support and constructive feedback in order to ensure high-quality deliveries. My goal is to support my artists in creating profound, artistic works.
Thank you for your time, and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!
Sincerely,
Ning Chen
